A Well-Insulated Location Is Key

No matter the size of your desired wine cellar, a well-insulated location will be crucial. Your wine will be happiest and age best when stored at an approximate temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity of around 60%.

That being said, the best way to ensure this temperature and humidity remain consistent is to ensure the location of the wine cellar is well-insulated. A location that’s naturally cool, such as a basement, will ensure that any cooling system you have in place won’t have to work overtime.

Your wine cellar’s walls should be insulated to a value of R-19, and its ceilings to R-30. Achieving these values may require the installation of a vapor barrier or rigid or spray-in foam insulation. Finally, the modern iron door you choose should offer a tight seal and not interfere with your wine racks when opening and closing it.

Use Materials and Lighting That Work with Your Collection

Because of the temperature and humidity of your wine cellar, you’ll want to ensure that its flooring and lighting always support this. Your flooring should be made of a material that can withstand high humidity. Any lighting needs to be enough for you to find a desired bottle and read the label but not so powerful that it adds heat to the cellar.

Rack It Up

How you store your wines will also come into play when designing your cellar. For example, you may typically purchase large bottles of wine but may sometimes only be able to get a desired vintage in a smaller bottle format. Therefore, it will become important to ensure any racking system you have can store more than one bottle format.

Design with the Future in Mind

Perhaps you’ve just begun collecting wines. Or, you may see a larger collection in the coming months or years. Whatever your circumstances, it’s important that you have enough space to store a growing number of vintages. The general rule-of-thumb is to ensure your wine cellar design idea accommodates your current collection, with room for a half-case or more if you already have a couple of cases.

A Reflection of You

Regardless of your wine cellar’s location or size, it should suit both your personal style and the style of your home. If it doesn’t, it won’t be something you love and will not add value to your home should you sell in the future.
